Kung Fu

Over J-term my group went to a dojo and did a Kung Fu workshop. It was really interesting to listen to Master Feng and his background training in Kung Fu under the Shaolin warrior monks. He talked about how he was chosen to practice at the temple at age five, and spent the next fifteen years training until he left and came to America and established his dojo. It was a really impressive and inspiring story. The amount of discipline and hard work that he had was incredible. He talked about how passion drives people and that that passion never really goes away. He also talked about how when you're passionate about something that ever when you stop doing it, the memories and lessons and skills you gained doing it stays with you. We first warmed up and stretched, and then later went across the floor practicing parts of kicking a punching, as well as rolling across the floor. I really respect the amount of different conditioning, as Kung Fu requires strength, flexibility, speed, stamina, endurance, and toughness. The training incorporated all different types of disciplines and exercise and it reminded me of my dance class. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I felt like I got to learn about the Chinese culture and values that were infused in this ancient practice. I am really motivated to work out more, and maybe even take some classes on my own.
